Religion and politics can not go together.Have a look at countries around the world. You will see that the nations which have separated the state from the church are more democratic than their counterparts which are still struggling to solve the church-state riddle. The example of Pakistan is obvious.
Unless Caesar and God function in their respective spheres both stand to lose.In Pakistan both religion and politics have sufferred due to the tussle between secular and religious elements of the society. If a state has an official religion the secular concept of democracy can not sustain itself.
In Pakistan the main opposition leaders issued a charter of democracy. In response some religious scholars have come with their own version called charter of Islam. The debate goes on and on with the connivance of the establishment which stands to gain from a society which is divided on fundamental issues.
The example of Pakistan can be extended to other countries to boot.
