Puerto Rico, The 51st State in the Union?
Closer to Washington, by its own choice
With 4 million Puerto Ricans on the island, and another 4 million in the United States, Puerto Rico is experiencing an unusual situation that many wish to change. Supporters of statehood and those affiliated with the Commonwealth are beginning to see a new tendency, which, while not exactly pushing for independence, leans toward Washington.
(From Madrid) THE CELEBRATION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARIES brought the unusual political position of Puerto Rico into focus.
A Spanish colony until 1890, the island fell under US control, becoming a commonwealth in the fifties of the last century.
One hundred and ten years after shifting from Spanish to American rule, some things indicate that something is changing in the Caribbean island. And that this something is not playing in favor of independence, but quite the contrary.
A UNIQUE POLITICAL STATUS
“The island’s anachronistic statute (undoubtedly colonial) may be reviewed in the near future” With four million Puerto Ricans on the island and another four million in the United States, Puerto Rico is experiencing quite an unusual situation; a situation that many would like to change.
Supporters of statehood –of the New Progressive Party (NPP)– and supporters of the commonwealth –those affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party (PDP)– are beginning to see a balance of power different from the ‘80s, which suggests that people are developing a new and distinct preference in the history of the island.
Puerto Rico participated in the Democratic primaries, where Hillary Clinton won with 68 percent of the vote on a day in which only 387,000 citizens voted (representing 16 percent of those registered). They chose between Clinton and Obama, but they will not vote in the US general elections come November. “According to CNN, 60 percent of voters would prefer statehood”
They have participated in Washington’s wars (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan), but they have never been able to vote for them.
This anachronistic statute (undoubtedly colonial) may be reviewed in the near future.
As Puerto Rico was the only colony of the Spanish Empire that did not proclaim its independence, one would tend to think that this would be the next chapter in its history. But this is not the case: Puerto Rico seems to march toward statehood.
ANOTHER STATE?
CNN broadcast a survey revealing that 60 percent of voters would prefer statehood for Puerto Rico, a percentage that the local papers —The Voice of Puerto Rico and The New Day — reduced to 57 percent. But this is a historical first: it is possible that for the first time, Puerto Rico could become the 51st state in the Union.
“If since the ‘80s the votes that advocated statehood never rose above 46 percent, now they have grown between 11 and 14 percentage points“ In a vote regarding political status held on November 14, 1992, the status of Commonwealth was bestowed upon Puerto Rico. The results of the referendum were as follows: 788,286 (46.3 percent) were in favor of statehood, 826,326 (48.6 percent) were in favor of an alternative form of Commonwealth, and finally, only 75,620 (4.4 percent) were in favor of independence.
Thus, the option of Commonwealth was chosen over statehood by 38,030 votes. On that occasion, with a total of 2,312,912 registered voters, 1,700,990 voted; a turnout of 73.5 percent.
“Everything suggests that Puerto Rico will become a full-fledged State of the Union” If since the ‘80s the votes that advocated statehood never rose above 46 percent, now they have grown between 11 and 14 percentage points. Luis Fortuño (candidate for the PNP and supporter of statehood) has a support that surveys have estimated at around 64 percent.
His electoral victory in the next elections could change the history of Puerto Rico, putting to an end a century as a US colony and several centuries as a Spanish colony, to join the Union as a state.
PARTNERSHIP WITH THE US GUARANTEES PROTECTION AGAINST DICTATORSHIP
“When we think of the unusual association of Puerto Rico with the destiny of the Union, that it has been freed from suffering dictatorships, one sees that the citizens of the island have not had it half bad” As a member of the Spanish-speaking community, one would tend to think that Puerto Rico has a pending date with history, and that it should move toward independence.
But historical processes do not obey the wishes of those who write about them; they simply present the outcome of history, leaving us to adapt to it.
Everything suggests that Puerto Rico will become a full-fledged State of the Union.
And perhaps this is not the worst thing that could happen. When we think of the unusual association of Puerto Rico with the destiny of the Union (as a commonwealth), that it has been freed from suffering dictatorships like those of Duvalier, Batista, Fidel Castro, Somoza, and others, one sees that the citizens of the island have not had it half bad.
If we add to that list of names characters like Pinochet, Videla, Stroessner, Fujimori, Perón, Chávez and many others, it seems even harder to find arguments against Statehood.
THE DECISION IS IN THE HANDS OF PUERTO RICANS
Eugenio Maria de Hostos (1839-1903), who was outraged when he heard that the US had invaded his homeland (he was in route to meet President McKinley with other Puerto Rican patriots at the same time that the US navy occupied Puerto Rico), probably would not agree with this outcome, but he would have to accept the argument that was once given: exercising our right as accidental citizens of the American Union who cannot be compelled against our will to be or not to be what we do not want to be, we will go to referendum.
If Luis Fortuño becomes the new Governor, probably we will have news of this pleibiscite.

The democratic primary in Puerto Rico only got 16% of registered voters, the lowest turn-out of voters ever in Puerto Rico, where the voting tradition is one of the highest in the world: 80% percent or 2 million voters.
Of those who voted, mostly pro US-statehood went to the polls while the Governing party’s center and left wing and the independence groups boycotted the event. 85% stayed in their homes.
Puerto Ricans are too proud of their history, their language and their national identity to ever become a US state which would mean the end of the Puerto Rican nationality. Puerto Ricans see how Hawaiians have become a minority in their own land, speaking a foreign language and sadly remembering who they were as a nation thru ‘Heritage Clubs and museums’.
That is why the US statehood choice, after 100 years of direct or inderect colonialism has never reached a 50.1% of the votes.
Puerto Rico wants to remain a latin american nation.

It never ceases to amaze me how people who have no first-hand knowledge of a country’s social, political and economical circumstances can make analyses with such conviction. As the other lady Christina wrote, referendums are boycotted by a large percentage of Puerto Ricans. The are a farce held only to appease the international community that has reproached rthe U.S. time and time again for its insistance on maintaining Puerto Rico and Guam, among other countries, as colonies, even though colonization has been condemned for decades.

Being “free from suffering dictatorships”, Sir, though fortunate, doesn’t necessarily mean we are a FREE nation. The United States’ intervention in our country, since 1898, not 1890,as you maintain, is not an indication of the U.S.’s good will towards Puerto Ricans. Quite the contrary. If you read the historical documents on the invasion of Puerto Rico by the U.S., you will note that Puerto Ricans were much disliked by United Statians and Congress vehemently opposed our annexation because we were considered “ignorant, lazy, colored peoples, but docile enough to mold”, and it would be a burden on the American country. But they weighed all the pros and cons and realized that they could reap from the relationship”, and found that this also spelled financial ($$$)profits. They destroyed our resources, our currency, took our air and sea space, imposed the U.S. postal system and established military bases all around the island. So I invite you Sir to do a bit more research before you make these unfounded extrapolations.

I would add only one comment to the apparent consensus about Democracy, specifically that of America my homeland, as expressed by some in posts.
In fact after years of research helped by retirement, I have come to the same inexcusable conclusion. I would temper this statement by saying true Democracy does not exist in America, and if it did I am not sure when it ended.
Today in America our ‘Democracy’ favors richly what Benito Mussolini called Fascism, in which a few wealthy and powerful through their financial institutions control the entire government for their own empire ambitions.

A mixture of dictators can be a poor arguement, especially if the relationship you are espoucing is with the nation that enabled and/or supported the dictatorship. Such as…
As example would be Augusto Pinochet of Chile, and Saddam Hussein of Iraq. And an assortment we once in America were told to call <a href=”http://rtpricetag.home.comcast.net/~rtpricetag/Saddam.html”Friendly Western Allies” is another group of undesirables.
Your statement was:

WHEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OPPOSES YOUR RIGHT TO BE FREE!!
Puerto Ricans, who desire to be free, must always know that the federal government, here in the States has no “subject matter jurisdiction” over the person, case or location and should be challenged to proof it. These are magic words to learn when in Court for desiring freedom.
You won’t be told this in court but: All jury members, judges, attorneys, and employees working in federal court, must reside in federal territory to legally be a federal juror or touch your case or they can be commercially sued, disbarred and financially ruined for violating your constitutional rights etc.
Your god given right to be free is not wanted by the USA, it will oppose your desire for independence and freedom.
The USA has been the biggest alien invaders the world has ever known. In order to win your freedom you must oppose them by knowing that their weakness lies in their violations to the Constitution and to the common law and common law remedies.
The Federal Government owns Puerto Rico, because it is a slave colony—whether you like the idea or not. But the Federal Government takes orders from those who own and run this Country, but are not of this country. The International Bankers, who really own the USA, will let PR be free, only if enough real men of Boricua blood wish to be free.
The answer to your freedom lies in your Constitutional rights — To win –You must always reserve your constitutional, commercial rights and know what they are.
The majority of Americans have no idea that the USA has killed more Latinos, than Hitler Killed Jews, The USA has supported Traitors, Dictators, Gringitos, Butchers, Sociopaths, and Megalomaniacs who were supported and kept in power by these monsters, sucking up to the Anglo Alien Invaders.
Latin America has had enough of this form of genocide of Latinos. That includes other African, Asian etc. countries that lost millions of innocent people from USA aggression.
I want to vomit every time some ignorant fools says: “If you don’t like it here –go home”.
If the Alien Invaders would get out of each and every Latin Country and stop interfering in our affairs—it would make sense to say such a stupid thing. But unless the Snakes get out of Latin America-we have just as much right to be here!!! So, grin and put up with it—this was once our land.
A Puerto Rican without a desire for independence and/or freedom from alien control has no soul of a man.
The fact that the public does not know that we are NOT free, makes no difference, to the desire to be free. The PR that wants Statehood is a Gringito, who has no soul of a man left in his traitor’s heart. Freedom is happening all over the world and yet we allow Gringitos to kill our right to be free.
A Gringito is a non-Anglo thing/person who internally is so inferior, that he desires to be what he can not be—thus Gringito means little gringo.
The Gringito is like an Uncle Tom to blacks or a collaborator and traitor to many others.
We allow the Alien Invaders to kill, harm, abuse, rape, and scam us and yet the Gringito wants to give our Country away.
This abuse must end. No man or woman is a real Man or real woman who is too scared to fight for their souls and be free. If you listen to the Gringito, you will lose your soul.
Thru out eternity Humanity owes its freedom from slavery, ONLY to brave souls who fought for your right to be free.
The fight will NOT succeed if you don’t fight the Gringito enemy at home first. He is there next door and claims he is a real man and tries to give you many excuses of why PR can’t be a free Country.
The fight for the independence of Puerto Rico is now non-violent and will be won in the hearts of real men around the World.
The Ronbothunter,
A proud freedom loving Puerto Rican.
